Mara's Legacy

Mara's Legacy

London, England 1821

All her life Mara Highbridge had hidden her accomplishment from the outside world. She has become the mistress of detail, and her sisters call her the queen of planning. She owns one of London’s most successful dress shops, but her family and a few tradespeople are the only people aware of her successes.

As a member of the Sisterhood of the Coin, she sent her ancient Roman coin and asked her older sister to honor their pledge. Mara also requested their foster mother provide any information regarding her birth parents.

A family friend of her brother-in-law Barnaby Roget protects her from a man trying to kidnapped Mara as she walks home from her dress shop. He believes the man will return and arranges for a married friend and his wife to stay with her at the Woodhaven estate.

Her foster mother sends her a package from Jewelry Row in London. The box contains an exquisite diamond teardrop necklace. Mara requests Barnaby’s help identifying where this item could have come from. Barnaby’s friend, a reformed jewelry thief from his former East side gang, announced he had never seen a more perfect diamond. Both men prowl the nightlife and men’s clubs, seeking information.

Mara continues to help the poor and homeless in London and fights to give them a better life, and before she knows it, Barnaby is working alongside her. Barnaby fell in love with Mara the first time he saw her. As the days go by, they become closer and closer. However, Barnaby feels he has nothing to offer this beautiful woman. He isn’t rich and doesn’t have a title or land.

She meets a man who she believes could be her father. He gives her all the diamonds and sapphires from a necklace that disappeared during the French Revolution and is referred to as “The Affair of the Diamond Necklace. The French government demands the necklace, as do many others who know of its existence.

Barnaby and Mara procure a special license and leave London to be married. One man confronts them, demanding the necklace. As does the French government. The thieves are outsmarted by the couple and friends. In time they purchase a run-down farm to use as a training school for people to learn a trade and grow food for Mara’s facility in London for the homeless and parentless children.
